Thursday Island, in the Torres Strait, lies between Papua New Guinea and the northern tip of Queensland. With its deep anchorage, it became an important port in 1875, three years after the Queensland Government unlawfully annexed most of the Torres Strait islands for defence purposes and to protect British shipping interests.
Today, Thursday Island is the administrative centre of all the Australian islands between Cape York and the New Guinea mainland. Almost 70 percent of the population of 3,000 are Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders. See the cannons at Green Hill Fort, where underground tunnels house the Torres Strait Historical Museum, and Gab Titui Cultural Centre, which exhibits historical artefacts and contemporary Indigenous art. French explorer Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, disappeared in this archipelago after his vessels, La Boussole and Astrolabe, struck the reef in 1788.
