Embark in the Northern Territory’s multicultural capital of the ‘Top End’ of Australia. Despite surviving two cyclones and several air raids, Darwin is distinguished by its relaxed lifestyle. The landscape of this group of about 65 islands in the far south of the Maluku province ranges from beaches to swamplands and densely forested hills with unique fauna, especially bird species. It is also home to fascinating culture - visit a local village to learn about their music, dance and traditional crafts, or experience a unique folkloric show and an ikat (textile) weaving demonstration. As the hub of Maluku’s boat culture, Sangliat Dol is famous for its megalithic sites and an ancient stone boat built as a tribute to the original inhabitants who arrived by sea. This small isolated island is a hidden gem located off the north coast of the Bomberai Peninsula. Known for its limestone formations, Papuan rock art and burial caves, the area has 24 endemic species of rainbow fish. Besides enjoying the nature, take the time to be immersed in Arguni’s culture: visit a stilt village on the shores of mangrove swamps, where you will be greeted by villagers, and discover the traditional music, dance, craft and food such as fresh coconut while meeting the local people.

This islet in East Indonesia is a conservation area, renowned for its abundant marine life in crystalline waters. Due to its remote location, Koon is one of the region’s least visited dive sites, making it an even more incredible experience. Thursday Island, in the Torres Strait, lies between Papua New Guinea and the northern tip of Queensland. With its deep anchorage, it became an important port in 1875, three years after the Queensland Government unlawfully annexed most of the Torres Strait islands for defence purposes and to protect British shipping interests.

Today, Thursday Island is the administrative centre of all the Australian islands between Cape York and the New Guinea mainland. Almost 70 percent of the population of 3,000 are Indigenous Torres Strait Islanders. See the cannons at Green Hill Fort, where underground tunnels house the Torres Strait Historical Museum, and Gab Titui Cultural Centre, which exhibits historical artefacts and contemporary Indigenous art. Also known as Santa Cruz, Ndende Island offers stunning lagoons brimming with marine life, stretches of reef, remote islands sprinkled with deserted beaches, crystalline caves, and many picturesque villages. Discovery: Walk across the island to see the schoolhouse and the traditional spirit houses, go kayaking and snorkelling, or explore the outer reefs and other islands by Zodiac. The five islands of Vanikoro are encircled by a spectacular barrier reef that offers excellent snorkelling. French explorer Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, disappeared in this archipelago after his vessels, La Boussole and Astrolabe, struck the reef in 1788. Visit a monument to Le Pérouse, erected by explorer Dumont Durville in 1827.

The largest island in the archipelago of Vanuatu, north of New Caledonia, is Espiritu Santo. While its main industries are fishing and farming, you will be dazzled by the beauty of Champagne Bay, one of the world’s most exquisite beaches. A freshwater spring flows into the lagoon, creating a spa-like bubbling sensation at low tide. Espiritu Santo has been inhabited for many years by Melanesian people known as Ni-Vanuatu, who still observe many ancient traditions.
