Itinerary

Arrive in Lisbon and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy free time to relax or explore. Stay Three Nights: Intercontinental Lisbon (or similar)

Today's city tour reveals the beauty of Lisbon, spread across several hills along the Tagus River. Highlights include the fortified Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery. You will also taste a typical Portuguese pastry, Pasteis de Belem, before going to Discoveries Monument, built in honour of Portugal's greatest maritime explorers. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore at your own pace. (B)

Travel out of Lisbon for a visit to Serra de Sintra, one of the country's most picturesque mountain villages. Your guided tour includes a visit to the fairytale Pena Palace, perched atop a rocky peak, and a wine tasting. You'll also enjoy free time to explore on your own. (B)

Travel by coach through the Portuguese countryside to Tomar. Admire spectacular frescoes and azulejos (iconic blue-painted tiles) during a visit to World Heritage-listed castle of the Knights Templar. Continue to Porto and board your river ship. Stay Seven Nights: MS Amavida (B/D)

Explore the city on a guided tour which includes the World Heritage-listed historic quarter. See Porto Cathedral, walk through the main square and visit the Sao Bento Railway Station, where you'll admire the blue and white mosaic tile panels. Finish with a port tasting. Active guests might prefer a hike through the city, which is laid out over two main hills. Visit the old harbour quarter, pass through medieval streets and finish with a port tasting. (B/L/D)

Arrive at your first port of call, the small village of Entre-Os-Rios, located at the confluence of the Tamega and Douro rivers. You'll be treated to a traditional home-cooked meal at a local quinta. (B/L/D)

Your day in Regua starts with a tour of the Palacio Anadia, or Palace of the Counts. Inside, admire the stained-glass windows, intricate panels of blue and white tiles, and a striking vaulted ceiling. (B/L/D)

Join an excursion to Lamego, where you'll visit one of the country's most important pilgrimage sites, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies. Alternatively, hike up the 686-step Holy Staircase. Afterwards, both groups will meet up for a tasting of local specialties such as bread filled with smoked ham, and a Portuguese sparkling wine. Return to your ship and enjoy the scenery on the way to Pinhao, where you'll disembark for a wine tasting at a local quinta. (B/L/D)

Set out on a walk to the Pinhao Railway Station, situated along Portugal's iconic Douro Line. Enjoy an exclusive lunch at Quinta da Avessada, where authentic local food is paired with entertainment from family members. After, explore the quinta's interactive museum detailing the history of wine in region. Finish your day with a wine tasting at another local quinta. (B/L/D)

Explore the village of Castelo Rodrigo on a walking tour through its medieval streets. The more active might choose a hike up to the town. Both groups will reconvene to enjoy a tasting of local fare including almonds, cheese, bread and wine. (B/L/D)

Disembark your ship in Vega de Terron and travel by coach to the World Heritage-listed city of Salamanca. You have free time to explore on your own, followed by a guided city tour that includes the New Cathedral and the House of Shells. Continue to Madrid and check in to your hotel. Stay Three Nights: Madrid, Westin Palace (or similar) (B/L)

Today is dedicated to exploring Spain's capital and largest city. On a guided tour, discover all the must-see sights including the Royal Palace, Buen Retiro Park, the Plaza Mayor and more. With a free afternoon and evening, you might like to visit some of the renowned art galleries such as the Prado Museum or the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. Otherwise, grab a bite to eat at a lively tapas bar or enjoy walking along the city's grand avenues. (B)

Head out of Madrid for the day for a visit to the World Heritage-listed city of Toledo. Here you'll find a wonderful collection of medieval buildings along its winding streets and fortifications. With a guide you'll visit the Cathedral of Toledo and the Synagogue Santa Maria La Blanca in the Jewish Quarter. Return to Madrid for leisure time. (B)
