Arrive in Havana today, the illustrious capital of Cuba. The city is known for its rich history, lively music, grand architecture, famous cigars, scrumptious cocktails and of course, classic old American cars. Havana

After breakfast, take a ride in a classic American car and feel the rhythm of the city during a guided tour. Visit some of the most famous areas of Havana including New Havana, Old Havana, the Malecón seawall promenade, the affluent neighbourhood of Miramar and the famous Colon Cemetery. Later, explore the city by foot and learn about its historical and colonial past in Old Havana. Visit Cathedral Square, San Francisco de Asis Square and the magnificent Arms Square. All the while, delight in the street theatre and commotion of everyday life along Havana's busy walkways - often the ultimate highlight. Select your preferred sightseeing activity today for your chance to see the city from a different perspective. On a Hemingway tour, you'll follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway throughout Havana. Visit the author's house at Finca de la Vigia, the fishing port of Cojimar and some of his favourite hangouts, including Hotel Ambos Mundos, La Bodeguita del Medio and the La Floridita bars, where the mojito and daiquiri cocktails began their journey of conquest. Perhaps embark on an Afro-Cuban heritage tour and discover the renowned Callejon de Hamel, where the Cuban artist fraternity congregate. Located in the heart of Havana, the alley is brightly decorated with colourful Cuban sculptures, art and paintings. Continue on to the largest arts and crafts market of Havana and browse the local fare. Or, take a fun salsa lesson. There is no better place to learn to dance than Havana! Mexico City

Set out on a city tour starting at the World Heritage-listed Historic Centre. Visit the beating heart of Mexico City - the Zócalo, one of the world's largest public squares. See the iconic Metropolitan Cathedral and Presidential Palace that dominate the bustling plaza. You'll also see the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a splendid white-marble cultural hub, and the ornate Main Post Office, which were both designed by the Italian architect Adamo Boeri. Afterwards, visit the National Museum of Anthropology. Its vast collections tell the story of Mexico's great civilisations. This evening, head to Hacienda de los Morales for a night of traditional Mexican dining and gracious hospitality. The estate's history dates back to the 16th century, where mulberry trees were planted to breed silkworms, from which the name Los Morales is derived. (B/D)

Mexico City

Today, a local archaeologist will guide you through Mexico's largest ancient city, Teotihuacan. Built between the 1st and 7th centuries, the holy metropolis is one of the most powerful cultural centres in Mesoamerica and is famous for its enormous monuments, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Next, enjoy lunch at a nearby plantation before seeing the celebrated Catholic shrine, the Basilica of Guadalupe. (B/L)

Puebla

As you approach the city of Puebla today, pass by Cholula and see the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, built atop a pyramid perched high on the mountain. During a tour of Puebla, you'll see this beautiful colonial city is characterised by hundreds of buildings adorned with decorative tiles known as Talavera. But it is the cuisine for which the people of Puebla are the proudest. Perhaps take the opportunity to sample a local favourite, mole poblano - a chocolate-tinged sauce made with chillies and spices. Oaxaca

Travel to the colourful city of Oaxaca where you will stay for three nights at a 16th-century hotel. The romantic property was once the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena with much of the original structure having been restored to its former glory. Embark on a tour of the city's sightseeing highlights. Journey along the charming pedestrian street and see the impressive cathedral and the Convento de Santo Domingo. Discover why Oaxaca is the gourmet heart of Mexico during a fun cooking class at a local restaurant, focusing on dishes that can easily be recreated when you return home. Before putting on your apron, you'll take a tour of a bustling market nearby, where delicious local ingredients and the best ways to use them in your cooking are explained. Return to the restaurant for your lesson, all the while, learning about the wondrous depth and flavour of Mexican cuisine as you prepare lunch. Oaxaca, San Cristóbal de las Casas

Fly to Tuxtla Gutierrez before your journey to one of the most spectacular places in Mexico's south-east, Cañon del Sumidero, for an awe-inspiring boat ride. The canyon's almost vertical walls are adorned with colourful caves and waterfalls, including the Árbol de Navidad (Christmas Tree). San Cristóbal de las Casas, San Juan Chamula

Set in a highland valley surrounded by vast pine forest, San Cristóbal de las Casas resonates with a peaceful atmosphere combined with bohemian flair. Visit the city oasis of Casa Na Bolom, once the home of renowned journalist, photographer and anthropologist Gertrude Duby Blom and her archaeologist husband Frans Blom. While Frans surveyed the ancient sites of the region, Gertrude dedicated her life to being an advocate for the Lacandon people of eastern Chiapas and their jungle home. Casa Na Bolom is now a museum with hundreds of Lacandon artifacts, including photographs, pottery, clothing and maps. Next, head to San Juan Chamula, a village known for its devotion to time-honoured traditions. You can easily identify the townsfolk by their clothing. The local women wear beautifully embroidered blouses, shawls and long black skirts and men dress in wool tunics called chujes. This fascinating town is truly a world apart, with shamanism and other forms of ancient folk medicine still widely practiced. (B/L)
