Arrive In Lisbon, Portugal

Welcome to Lisbon! At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and travelling companions for a welcome dinner with wine at your hotel. (D)
2

Lisbon

Lisbon was the centre of Europe's longest-lived overseas empire. Portugal's imperial ambitions date back to Prince Henry the Navigator's 15th-century discoveries in West Africa. Morning sightseeing with a Local Guide features a drive through the Baixa quarter's main squares. Then, enjoy a walk through the cobblestone alleys of quaint ALFAMA, the popular quarter of the seamen and Fado singers. Drive along the grand Avenida da Liberdade up to Pombal Square, and stop for pictures of Belem Tower and the Monument of the Discoverers. Also visit JERONIMOS MONASTERY with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. An exciting optional excursion to the royal palace of Queluz is available, as well as dinner at a typical taverna with Fado-style entertainment. (B)
3

Lisbon - Obidos - Alcobaca - Nazare - Fatima - Tomar

Stop in medieval Obidos and go back in time as you pass the main gate in the impressive perimetre wall and walk along the narrow streets. Continue to Alcobaca to visit the CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA MONASTERY, built in the 12th century for 999 Cistercian monks. See the elaborate tombs of King Pedro I and his Castilian lover, Ines de Castro. The fishing harbour of Nazare is the perfect place for a leisurely lunch break. In the afternoon, mix with the pilgrims at the country's hallowed national shrine, Fatima's SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY. Overnight in Tomar, the historic seat of the mighty Order of the Knights of Christ. (B/D)
4

Tomar - Conimbriga - Coimbra - Oporto

Visit the hilltop CONVENT OF CHRIST with its famous Manueline Window. Farther north, the ROMAN RUINS OF CONIMBRIGA are eloquent testimony to centuries of Roman influence. Tour the excavations, admire the well-preserved mosaics, and visit the excellent MUSEUM. Continue to Coimbra, strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mondego River. After a visit to the gilded baroque LIBRARY of its 700-year-old university, drive by ancient Bucaco Forest on your way to Oporto, Portugal's second-largest city. Tonight, why not join an optional cruise on the Douro River, followed by dinner at one of Oporto's fine restaurants? (B)
5

Oporto

Sightseeing with a Local Guide includes a panoramic drive to the mouth of the Douro River, the soaring cathedral, the richly decorated CHURCH OF SAO FRANCISCO, and the STOCK EXCHANGE with its contemporary ARABIAN HALL/ inspired by Granada's Alhambra. Next, visit the famous Sandeman & Co. PORT WINE CELLAR to taste the Port wine produced from grapes of the Douro Valley. (B)
6

Oporto - Guimaraes - Vila Real - Viseu

In Guimaraes, often referred to as the "Cradle of Portugal" because of its association with the country's first king, Alfonso Henriques, enjoy a walk through the medieval centre. Next, taste Portuguese tapas with wine at the Quinta da Aveleda WINERY and visit its splendid GARDENS. From here, a scenic road through the port wine vineyards leads to Viseu, where a special dinner with local specialties and wine awaits you at Forno da Mimi restaurant. (B/D)
7

Viseu - Belmonte - Castelo De Vide - Evora

This morning, stop in Belmonte, today a symbol of Jewish awakening, for a visit of the JEWISH MUSEUM. Also enjoy an OLIVE OIL TASTING, for which the area is famous. Afternoon break in Castelo de Vide, with time to walk through the Jewish quarter with its white-washed houses and its medieval synagogue. Before arriving in Evora, the cultural centre of southern Portugal and a former royal residence, visit a CORK FACTORY and learn about the many ways this material can be used. (B/D)
8

Evora - Algarve

A massive wall surrounds Evora's medieval centre, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Follow your Local Guide on a walking tour through its narrow alleys to the Roman Temple, the early gothic CATHEDRAL/ Portas de Moura fountain, and SAO FRANCISCO CHURCH. Visit the OSSUARY CHAPEL/ whose walls are covered with thousands of human bones and skulls. Next, proceed across the arid Alentejo plain to the Algarve, Portugal's most popular holiday area, and check in to your hotel with rooms overlooking the ocean. Tonight, why not try one of the seafood restaurants for which the Algarve is famous? (B)
9

Algarve Coastal Excursion

Highlight today is a visit to the wind-swept PROMONTORY OF SAGRES, where Henry the Navigator lived and planned his overseas expansion. Only a few kilometres away is Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern corner of continental Europe, a dramatic cliff defying the waves of an ever-angry Atlantic Ocean. Time in pretty Lagos before returning to your hotel. (B)
10

Algarve - Azeitao - Lisbon

Take the scenic route over the Serra da Arrabida and savour sweeping views of the Troia Peninsula. “Lives Up to its Name”

A comprehensive journey around Portugal that included all of the major and desired destinations. Highlights of the tour were Porto for all of its treasures, the Night Templar castle at Tomar, and the ghoulish Ossary chapel at St Francis's in Evora. This tour is packed with so called " must see attractions" and points of interest, and spaces them out very skilfully. If you're not beholden to Papists you'll probably find the visit to Fatima both appalling and indeed fascinating if you're interested in human nature. The various stalls selling wax candle models of almost every imaginable human body part and organ to be offered up in one of three ostentatious churches at Fatima is likely to fill you with disbelief, if not disgust, but as an example of MacReligion, upsized, you will find very few other exemplars to upstage it. Be aware that the ratio of wheelchairs to pedestrians is much higher in Fatima.

Hotels were largely comfortable and historically interesting apart from the Mondial in Lisbon and the very tired and smelly Tivoli at Carvoeiro, where I would have gladly given up the stunning ocean view for something more of the general Globus standard. The historic hotels at Viseu and Evora were a special delight. Think about arriving in Lisbon two to three days earlier, as I did. This will enable you to either walk or take a tuk-tuk up to Sao Jorge's castle, spend more time in the old town, visit some interesting museums like the Gulbenkian which has many treasures, and to use the hop off hop on bus to visit other attractions not covered by the short orientation provided by the tour. Overall, I found it a great tour that lets you dip your toes into Portugal and make many discoveries about this lovely little country of ten million people.

“Portugal in depth”

Another fabulous Globus tour. Tour guide Rita was simply wonderful. Sharing her passion for her home country, adding little extra side excursions to experience local life and treating us with regional delicacies all added to a memorable trip around Portugal. Her knowledge of the country's history and culture was expressed in humorous and entertaining tales. The tour was perfectly paced to enjoy all that Portugal had to offer, though extra time in Sintra on the optional excursion should be considered for future tours. Luckily I was able to return to Sintra after the tour and explore this beautiful town further.

Hotels were in great locations and some were absolute jewels, particularly in Evora and Tomar. Time spent on the Algarve was a relaxing way to end the tour in a stunning location. The hotel was in need of a renovation but we were warned that it was not the standard of all our previous accommodations and was chosen for it's beautiful clifftop setting. Meals on the tour were delicious and abundant! All tour members waddled out of our Porto restaurant...a feast to remember! In summary, I would happily recommend this tour as it showcased Portugal's diverse regions in a comfortable and relaxed pace. A big thank you to Hannah of Global Journeys for her timely communications. Always a pleasure to deal with a true professional. I look forward to booking my next adventure with her and the Global Journeys team.

“A surprising and rewarding tour in many ways”

Repacking and moving on can be a bit demanding with a coach tour like this, but Portugal has the advantage of short coach times between stopovers. It proved to be a surprising and rewarding tour in many ways: educative and interesting, as well as enjoyable. Portugal is a small country packed with cultural and historical attractions. It was an eye-opener to discover that this small country pioneered colonisation of the known world (and probably discovered and dismissed Australia as a worthwhile acquisition before any other Western navigators). Henry the Navigator was the first of a series of intrepid sailors and discoverers (or, from the opposite perspective, colonising conquistadors and exploiters). They ventured as far as India and Japan before Spain and other European countries. We did all of the optional tours and thoroughly enjoyed them.
