In addition to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, famous shrines, and other historic sites, this Japan tour also includes visits to two of Japan’s beautiful gardens: Koraku-En, dating to 1686 and considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens, and Shinjuku Gyoen, dating to 1603 when it was a feudal lord’s home. You’ll enjoy a local lunch and taste the “Japanese pizza” of Osaka: the legendary okonomiyaki dish. Plus, you’ll ride on the famous bullet train or shinkansen. Itinerary

Welcome to Japan's capital city. Hotel rooms are available for mid-afternoon check-in.

Meet your Tour Director and travel companions prior to morning sightseeing in Tokyo. Your tour starts with a visit to Meiji Shrine, a magnificent 20th-century Shinto monument set in a man-made forest. Next, visit Shinjuku Gyoen Garden. Originally dating from the early 1600s, the garden was destroyed in World War II and reopened in 1949 as a public park. Today, it remains an immensely popular stop for locals and visitors alike. Last stop is the Asakusa Kannon Temple and the bustling Nakamise shopping arcade. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. (B)

This morning, leave Tokyo and head south along the coast to the beautiful Five Lakes region. Here, take a cable-car ride (weather permitting) for panoramic views of Lake Kawaguchi and spectacular Mount Fuji, or Fujisan as the loca'sl call it, Japan's highest mountain. You'll also visit Chureito Pagoda for a chance to snap your own iconic image of the pagoda with Fujisan in the background! (B/L)

This morning, board one of Japan's famous bullet trains bound for Kyoto. Upon arrival, visit Sanjusajendo Temple, famous for its 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. After lunch, visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, renowned for the thousands of brightly coloured Torii Gates. Then, take a walking tour through Gion, Kyoto's most famous geisha district, and sample a local Japanese treat. This evening, you may choose to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan (additional fee). (B/L)

Your day begins with a visit to stunning Kinkakuji, the Temple of the Gold Pavillion, covered in shimmering gold leaf. Then walk through bustling Nishiki Market, a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Next, stop at the Samurai and Ninja Museum for a guided tour.

Along the way learn about their history and hear interesting stories. Exhibits include weapon's and tools used by ninja on their covert missions and authentic period-specific samurai swords, armour, and helmets (kabuto). You will even have the chance to have your picture taken wearing a helmet and armour! The afternoon is free for you to explore more of Kyoto's historic sites and shrines. (B)

This morning, drive south to Okayama and visit Koraku-en, one of the "Three Great Gardens of Japan." Covering some 30 acres, the garden features ponds, plum groves, and tea fields. A unique feature not typically found in Japanese gardens are the wide lawns which are said to help uplift the spirit and promote open mindedness. In Kurashiki, enjoy some free time in the Bikan Historical Quarter, once the political and commercial centre of the city. The canal-lined, white-washed, and stone streets reflect the Edo period (1603-1867) and are quintessentially Japanese. Continue to Hiroshima. (B)

Today's full day sightseeing includes two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Peace Memorial Park and Itsukushima Shrine. Start at Peace Memorial Park where you'll see the See the Peace Memorial, commonly referred to as the Atomic Bomb Dome, that has been preserved just as it was on August 6, 1945, immediately after the bombing. You will also visit the Memorial Museum and Memorial Hall, which commemorate the lives lost that day. Then, travel to Miyajima Island to visit Itsukushima Shrine, known for its beautiful floating Torii Gate. (B)

Drive north to Bizen, where you'll visit a traditional pottery workshop to learn more about Bizen-yaki, one of Japan's six ancient pottery styles dating back over 1,000 years. Stop in Himeji to visit Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the the finest surviving example of early 17th-century Japanese castle architecture that combines function with elegance. Continue to Osaka and enjoy the evening at leisure. (B)

Your sightseeing tour starts at the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses, where traditional thatched-roof farm houses dating from the Edo period have been restored. Be transported back in time as you explore the old architecture. Visit Osaka Castle then for lunch, experience the city's legendary dish, okonomiyaki, a Japanese-style savoury pancake.

Finish your sightseeing with a walking tour in Minami where the locals come for fun. Made up of Shinsaibashi, Namba, and Dotonbori this area is home to great dining and nightlife and some of the city's most fashionable shops and department stores. The late afternoon and evening is at your leisure. Perhaps return to Dotonbori this evening to sample some local cuisine and see the sparkling neon lights. (B/L)

Your tour ends with breakfast this morning. (B)

Wonderful tour through Japan   0 , QLD, Australia, Sep 2023
We had a wonderful time from start to finish on this tour. Global Journeys made it all so easy for us with the tour booking and organising our flights - we could not fault Jemma she was excellent. The tour itself was great we saw everything we had hoped to and the tour guide Aki was so well informed and had a great sense of humour keeping everyone happy ...read more during the bus trips. The Samurai Museum was great fun and the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto and Himeji Castle near Osaka were the highlights for us but everyday was a pleasure on this tour. Weather wise it was quite hot at the start of the tour and on the last day so would probably advise anyone who doesn’t like the heat to go later in the year or in spring. Highly recommend this tour.
Japan tour 0 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2023
We enjoyed our first trip to Japan. Everyone in the group were pleasantly nice to each other. Our tour guide Akiko was knowledgeable and helpful. We saw more places that we would if we did it on our own. Our highlight of the trip was seeing the view of Mount Fuji.
Enjoyable tour through Japan 1 , VIC, Australia, Sep 2019
We arrived in Tokyo 2 days before the start of the tour. We managed to navigate the metro system to visit some additional attractions not on the tour. Aki was our guide who was very knowledgable and was very helpful with advice. Our group comprised of 16 and we all enjoyed each other’s company. It was very hot and humid for our tour which slowed ...read more us down a bit. There was quite a lot of walking and steps to climb when visiting temples and shrines so we were quite tired at the end of each day.

The highlights of the tour were Tokyo, Takayama where we visited the thatched houses and stayed in a beautiful hotel in the Alps which had a thermal spa and beautiful scenery. Kyoto was enjoyable, Temple of the Gold Pavilion and the Adachi Museum of Art and Gardens. Hiroshima was special and very emotional and of course the bullet trains were amazing. Our tour ended in Osaka but unfortunately we did not have time for sightseeing. I would suggest adding on an extra day to spend some time in Osaka. On reflection I think November would have been a better month to travel, a bit cooler and you would see the autumn colours.

The accommodation on the most part was good, perhaps the location could have been better in some cases.
The optional tours were good, we did Mt Fuji which was covered in fog but an enjoyable day and Nara. I would suggest booking your optional tours from home in advance as we did not thinking we could book at the start of the tour as we have done on other tours, Cosmos included. In this case we were told that the tours could be booked out but luckily we were able to be included. On booking the tour it would be advisable for Cosmos to inform people of the importance of pre-booking the optional tours.

It would have been good to have some included meals so that the group could socialise. We had difficulty ordering meals due to the menus being in Japanese and staff not speaking English. We had to resort to 7 Eleven and Starbucks at times due to the communication problem. A few group dinners with our guide would have helped and taken the stress out of selecting food. We did manage to find a pub and had a hamburger and chips one night. All in all despite the challenges we had a wonderful time with lots of laughs and memories to cherish.
Journey through Japan 7 , NSW, Australia, Apr 2019
Our trip was organised expertly - we had a fabulous time, hotels were good, our tour guide Rumi was fantastic and had expert knowledge of all areas of Japan. She looked after us and made sure we saw all that we could in Japan. We contemplated travelling Japan on our own but I am so glad we changed to the tour - we saw far more than we could have on ...read more our own. This was the second Cosmos tour we have taken and we have found them extremely well run and we would recommend them to anyone.
Excellent Overall Experience in Japan with Cosmos & Global Journeys!   7 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2018
In September 2018, my daughter & I took the 12 day "Journey Through Japan" Cosmos tour. Our lovely Japanese guide, Aki, was the best and just so welcoming with her knowledge and gentle sense of humour, and our coach driver was very polite and helpful. Our accommodation was excellent especially in Tokyo and as to be expected in Japan, our hotel rooms ...read more weren't huge. The daily buffet breakfasts of both Japanese and Western options were a great way to start each day.

The tour pace, sightseeing and excursions were very good with even a Shinkansen (bullet train) journey included. It was a fantastic way to experience Japan for the first time and we will definitely be returning! Special thanks to Georgie who handles our international bookings so efficiently - all of my trips have gone off so smoothly with Global Journeys!
Timeless Japan tour with Cosmos 3 , NSW, Australia, Sep 2018
Cosmos was very good and the price was competitive. We travelled just after Typhoon Jebi and we were amazed at the speed and work ethic of the Japanese. Global Journeys was excellent to deal with and promptly replied to my every request. I would highly recommend them and would use them to book my next holiday. Juliet was especially good.
